Music Evening 10th Nov

Rose Ash Church in about 1895 after the Southcomb-restoration.

There was a good turn-out for our recent music evening, run by Murray Hammick, who set up his vintage stereo-system in the church as usual.

The theme of the evening was "Arrangements of classical pieces" which included many very recent arrangements and compositions, based on music written originally by Bach, Handel, Mozart and Beethoven etc.

Some of the tracks played dated from the late 1960s when the pop-music world started to get interested in taking a well-known classical piece and "re-composing" it into a fast and jazzy version. Some versions of old tunes we have probably all heard before - such as Simon and Garfunkel's American Tune, based on a Bach choral piece. But others, like the Dutch-band Ekseption, were new to all, and showed how skillful the musicans in many of those "modern" bands really were. (Of course, the word "modern" in this case refers to musicians who were in their heyday up to fifty years ago!

The evening raised almostt £300 for the church-bell restoration fund, and also for Blind Veterans UK (the charity that looks after blinded forces-veterans), as it was of course Remembrance Sunday on the 10th.

Many said this event was one of the best so far, and people have already asked when Murray is going do the next music event. Please contact him with any special requests for a theme !

In the meantime, however, there will be a Rod Stewart evening, organised by Sharon and Keith Brown, on the 17th January, in the church. We look forward to getting more details from Sharon in due course, and will advertise the event closer to the date. Make a note in your diary as it should be a great evening!
